In the autumn of 1979 I took the temperature of Swedish rock music. A lot of text about so many unimportant records, I think probably in retrospect, but the final clip about Tomas Ledin I think stands up well today.
Swedish rock music? Does it exist or do the Swedish artists on their Swedish record companies (or the Swedish section of the large multinational label) just try to reflect the foreign possible development and become echoes and reruns of trends such as the new wave and disco music?
If you listen, as I have done this past week, to a huge number of newly released Swedish records of varying quality with artists with very different values, you naturally become ambivalent. But also discovers the immense breadth there is in Swedish popular music.
The alternative music movement didn't begin ten years ago as many might think. Back then, there were few opportunities for new Swedish bands to make records. Musiknätet and Silence had an almost, pardon the expression, monopoly position where they only accepted groups and artists with the "right" ideologies and radical song lyrics.
It is only now that this injection seems positive and, for the new groups, feasible. It is now that the garage and basement bands get the opportunity to reach their goal – to make a record. They are made at small non-profit, private and self-financed companies. Many have been absorbed by Nacksvingsligan in Gothenburg and Musiknätet in Vaxholm, but the vast majority are free and independent.
Nacksving's botanization among new progressive Stockholm groups has understandably been harshly criticized from Vaxholmshåll, who talk about imperialism and other placard vocabulary. "Ruff Moisture & Suck" (Avanti) may be referred to as the first attempt.
There are three debuting groups that have been recorded live at the club Fasching during a few spring days this year. They all have one thing in common: I don't think they're ready for an entire LP debut, so the division is appropriate both on stage and record.
In addition, the three groups play quite different music so the portions of three or four songs from each group are just right. Ruff plays jazz blues and all five of the group write songs, appearing as the most experienced of the three. Moisture makes rocking pop rock and in just four songs has time to show its broad musical direction. Suck is punkier, with girl singers, but is more fun than that.
Skånegruppen Kriminala Gitarrer may be considered to belong to the latest wave of record-debuting amateur groups. Was included on the compilation album "Svensk Pop" and is now up to date with a new single, "36 cartridges" (Kloaak), which is sludgy, ratty but not exciting punk rock.
Swedish rock is also rock'n'roll. I think of groups like Boppers, Kung Sune, Rockfolket and – Rockvaktmästarna. The Malmö group that is now making its record debut (Mudist). They make old rock in a technically newfangled way with cheeky lead guitar, vocals in English and mostly original songs. Unfortunately, they are inferior songwriters so it would have been better to hear their versions of the old classics.
All artists seem to have a rock'n'roll period. Harpo, or Jan Svensson as he likes to call himself here, is currently in the middle of his. "Råck änd råll, plain and simple" (EMI) is his way of seeing, and of course hearing, the old rock classics in Swedish. Have translated them and given them ironic interpretations that leave me completely kall. The LP also contains some newly written Harpo songs and I like "Medicinman" better, where he only accompanies himself on acoustic guitar.
Moonshine, featuring elements from the National Team and New Strangers, makes country rock. Or at least did on his a few years old debut writing. Now on their new album "Full Moon" (EMI) they are kinder and the toughness is completely missing. "There are no songs left", for example, sounds like a smoothed-out schlager festival song...
EMI invests comparatively heavily in Swedish artists. But behind the outstanding Ulf Lundell, they find it difficult to find opposites to family-loving names such as Björn Skifs, Harpo and others. Former National Team members Lasse Lindbom and Magnus Lindberg are somewhere in between.
The latest EMI addition is Peter O Ekberg and his new group System with, among others, Kerstin Vretmark. From the dansband label Tor via progressive Bellatrix, together with the Raj Montana Band, he is now under powerful protection and the first small attempt is called "To life and to the night", taken from an upcoming LP. Anonymous song that reduces expectations.
Tomas Ledin has also made rock music. But that was five LPs ago... In the meantime, he has stepped on in his stupid "development" into a pure disco artist. "Ut på stan" (Polydor) contains longer songs than before but does not change the lasting impression of Ledin as a puppet in the disco game in recent years.
